Rehearsal Notes - October 15

Stig In, Lucia, Stig In - Video



Process in, starting on right foot, one step per measure - eye contact with each other. Move to the following mixed scattered locations. Arrive by the end of the first verse.


First 4 measures of Verse 2, move to a circle (all facing towards the audience)




Measures 5 - 8 of Verse 2, stay in the circle formation.


Measures 9-12 of Verse 2, move to double diamond formation




Measures 13 - 16 of Verse 2, hold in the double diamond formation


Measures 17 - 22 of Verse 2, move to two line formation :


Measures 1 - 4 of Verse 3, move to double V formation :




Measures 5 - 8 of Verse 3, hold in the double V formation.


Measures 9 - 12 of Verse 3, move to four line formation :


Measures 13 - 16 of Verse 3, hold in 4-line formation

Measures 17 - 22 Move apart into a mixed scattered formation.

Sure on This Shining Night


Begin in a clump, in the following lines.
From stage right to stage left, row 1 in the front then rows 2, 3 & 4
Row 1 - Rachael, Rowan, Hayley, Anna S, Katelyn, Charlotte
Row 2 - Talisa, Maiti, Laycie, Morgandy, Mackenzie C, Raquel
Row 3 - Molly, Georgia, Morgan, Leah, Katie, Kate
Row 4 - Theresa, Gabrielle, Mack H, Anna C, Sarah


Measure 1
“Kelp” movement on the downbeat (drift out from the clump, then return)
Measure 2 - 4
Expand to four-line formation, make sure to be in between the two people in front of you
Measures 5 - 9 (when you start singing)
Rows trade places (rows 2 & 4 move forward, rows 1 & 3 move back)
Measures 10 - 12 (when you start singing)
Pivot 45˚on left foot to face downstage right
Measures 13 - 14
Two steps back (right foot, then left foot - leave the right foot forward)  - Think about the wind pulling you back and then pushing you forward (but gently and kindly!)
Measures 15 - 16
Then two steps forward (onto right foot, then left foot forward, then feet together)
Measures 17 - 18
Pivot to face forward
Measures 19 - 20
Drift to a clump in the middle of the stage, maintaining your lines
Measure 21
Kelp movement
Measure 22 - 25
Drift to four-line formation (where you just came from)
Measure 26 - 27
Rows trade places (to return to original locations, from measure 2)

Winter’s Night

NOTE - THIS PIECE IS TO BE MEMORIZED FOR NEXT WEEK

Four-bar phrases when you are singing text “Vai-ja na”
Altos, when you have sustained notes please stagger-breathe

**Every time you see a “la” it is a TYPO and should be “ja” - in fact the only words are “Vai-ja na & no” Anything else is wrong!**

Rehearsal Notes - April 3

El Grito - Video

El Grito - same pitch as the last note of VC4
Mm 1 SCREAM Adela & Martirio choreography, Gallery enrapt attention on them
Mm 2 - 4 Back row stands up and leans over the front row, front row leans in toward the centre, upstage foot forward.
Mm 5 Back row place hands on the backs and shoulders of the people in the front row.
Mm 6 & 7 Full body circle first to the right (counter clockwise), then to the left (clockwise). Rearticulate on the start of measure 7 and switch direction.
Mm 8 Re-intensify the lean in toward the centre
Mm 9 SCREAM  Adela attempts to hug Martirio. Gallery returns to sitting and standing upright
Mm 10 Front row press the backs of your hands together with your neighbours and stand up all at the same. As you stand, let hands float down to your sides.
Mm 11 Hold hands with your neighbour, people on the ends hold hands between the front and back row
Mm 12 Continue holding hands. Lean in toward the centre.
Mm 13 SCREAM Martirio threatens Adela. Gallery return to standing upright, drop hands to sides.
Mm 14 - 18 Walk to form a double U (meet in the centre). Threateningly surrounding Adela and Martirio.
Mm 19 SCREAM Adela threatens Martirio.
Mm 20 - 21 Gallery stand and sing (for now)


Gallery splits in the centre when Martirio says “Mother! Mother!” And Adela says “Let me pass!”

Virita Criosa 5 - D spreads (Nikki) + rapid crescendo under BERNARDA: Behave! Behave! Quiet! If only I ad a thunderbolt between my fingers! MARTIRIO: She was with him! Look at her petticoat, full of straw!

Rehearsal Notes - March 28

O Vos Omnes - video












Mm 1 - 18 Sitting and singing and looking at Angustias.
Mm 19 - 25 “SI (cut)” - Right hand reach toward Angustias, “DO” left hand grab right hand and “SI (milis)” bring it to your chest (right hand in a fist, left hand flat on top). The action should start when your part begins singing.
Mm 26 - 28 Hands come out as if they are floating on water just lower than boob height
Mm 29 - 31 Wring out the washcloth three times (right hand wrings forward first), your hands will get closer together as you do this action. Lots of tension in your hands.
Mm 32 - 35 Drop your left hand to your left thigh and bring your right hand to your heart. Move when you sing.
Mm 36 - 53 Sitting and singing and looking at Angustias.
54 - End Same actions as Mm 19 - 35, but now that Martirio has entered some of the focus will shift to her.

Mm 1 - 16 Move to new Gallery positions with purposeful energy

Mm 131 - 136 Look at one another as if you are plotting to intervene in the action.
Mm 137 - 138 Look over your downstage shoulder toward Bernarda (in the balcony)
Mm 139 - 144 Look at one another as if you are plotting to intervene in the action.
Mm 145 - 146 Look over your downstage shoulder toward Bernarda (in the balcony)
Mm 147 - 150 Watch the Servant enter and watch the movement score that occurs
Mm 151 - 154 Gallery slowly stand up starting with upstage chairs.
Mm 155 - 159 Adela enters. Lean upstage, hands on the shoulder of the person next to you, starting with people who are furthest upstage. Fade away on the last note.

Rehearsal Notes March 6

End of Cancion de jinete

During the scene following Cancion de jinete :
Gallery holds relaxed watching position after Poncia says “dressed in sequins.” Shift energy inward, more interest in what is being said.
Adela: “They are forgiven everything” - Sit back
Amelia: “To be born a woman is the greatest punishment” - Look at one another
Magdalena: “Even our eyes aren’t our own” - Look down
Poncia: “They are turning the corner” - Look straight ahead

Martirio: “No, I’ve heard it other nights” - look at each other
Martirio: “Amelia” - lean forward

Virita Criosa 2 - Video
Mm 1 - 16 Angustias slowly enters (“Where is my photo of Pepe?”). Gallery stands, beginning with the people who are farthest upstage. Direct energy toward the centre of the stage.
Mm 41 - 56 Poncia, Magdalena & Adela enter. Gallery drift to three groups.  
group 1 (Stage Right) : Kallie, Carolyn, Georgia, Leah, Brianna, Rachael
group 2 (upstage centre) : Mackenzie, Paige, Grace, Sydney, Nikki, Joanna
group 3 (Stage Left) : Tenille, Jordyn, Julia, Sara, Talisa, Krystal
Mm 57 - 60 Gallery lean in toward each other, curious about what is happening.
Mm 61 - 72 Bernarda appears behind the screen. Middle group of Gallery split in the centre and join the other two groups. Bernarda choreo. Gallery’s reaction is fearful, holding on to one another.
Mm 73 - 88 Poncia enters with the photo. Bernarda hits Martirio with her stick. Every two measures, starting with measure 73 (then 75, then 77) Gallery makes one move at a time to form a blockade in front of the sisters. There will be 8 moves in total. Look at Bernarda as you move.

Mm 9 - 16 (hummed, piano) Move to formation

Mm 89 - 90 Slowly turn heads to look upstage
Mm 91 - 92 Slowly turn heads to look downstage
Mm 93 - 94 Slowly turn heads to look upstage
Mm 95 - 98 Slowly turn back to face centre
Mm 99 - Stillness
100 - 101 Slowly turn to face upstage, connect physically with the people on either side (domino effect starting with Carolyn, Grace & Jessica)
102 - Return to facing centre, drop hands
Mm 103 - 128 Repetitive movement for Altos (begins with a sympathetic feeling, but over the course of the section you lose your empathy for Bernarda) Sopranos shift movements three or four times in the section
Mm 129 - 130 All movement stop, shift gaze to look at Poncia. Keep Christina in your peripheral vision for the cut off.

Rehearsal Notes - January 31

Homework Notes
Virita Criosa (Section 1) & La luna asoma are to be memorized for next week (Feb. 7th)
Las Amarillas is to be memorized for Feb. 14th


General Gallery Note
There is not a need for people in the back row to file in all from the same side. You can use both the upstage and downstage sides of the back line.

Miserere
Practice the slowness of the last page, plan your breathing.


Mm 1-14 Processional, one step per bar on beat one, beginning with your right foot. Once you get onto the stage, break away from the line to make a mixed scattered formation facing forward. Everyone onstage by the end of mm 14.


Mm 15 Move into Gallery seating. Remain in this position until mm 36.






Move to Mixed Scattered positions at Mm 36 (see below for Mixed scattered positions)


You start moving right on Mm 36, and start the choreo score as soon as you reach your position.


Mm 36 Face stage left, right elbow up,
Mm 37 right hand press down and pivot.
Mm 38 & 39 Left shoulder forward, left foot step forward in a lunge
Mm 40 Hands up to peek over the ledge,
Mm 41 push down with both hands and bring left foot back to meet right foot
Mm 42 Step back with Right foot, left foot comes up to point with the toe, both hands come up next to the face (“I don’t care”)
Mm 43 & 44 Left foot step back to join right foot, hands come down (palms up) to sweep across in front of the body, right hand on top.
Mm 45 & 46 Hands tighten into fists and cross back across the body
Mm 47 & 48 Wring (like a facecloth) right hand tilts forward first (once per measure)
Mm 49 & 50 Left hand slowly drops and opens at your side while right fist comes up next to your ear, pinky toward the audience (as if you were about to stab someone)
Mm 51 & 52 Left hand pulls right hand to belly button (put the knife away!) Left hand is on top of right hand
Mm 53 & 54 Hands flip over (left hand is cradling right hand still in a fist), rotate both hands toward stage left and step-lean back with right foot
Mm 55 - 57. Right hand (claw like) leads from shoulder to escape from the left hand, left hand pushes right hand down to your side while you lean forward to bring right foot back in line with left foot
Mm 58 & 59 Hands spread apart and come down by your sides
Mm 60 Hands are relaxed by your sides, lift gaze to the pipe organ
Mm 61 Gaze back to centre
On the release of the ‘n’, heads down.


Heads stay down for the first two lines of dialogue. At the NOTHING of the Servant’s line, heads come up.


Bell Transition
Altos - Drop from your C to a low A. 3 “Bongs”
Sopranos - Join on the second or third “Bong” on the low A


After the three unison tones, start a descending pattern “D - C - A”. Start slow, build in speed, then fade back to a very slow descending pattern (follow Christina)


Remain in place for the first three bell tones. Then, as you sing the descending pattern, move to your new Gallery positions as shown below. Remain standing when you arrive in position. SISTERS DO NOT GO TO THE GALLERY - GO BEHIND THE SCRIM. Leave their seats empty, however (names in red):



Sisters & Servant will not be singing the first 12 bars of music.


Mm 1 - 12 Servant movement. Gallery remains standing to sing.
Mm 12 : Sisters enter from behind the scrim.
Lights up behind the scrim. Bernarda appears.
Bernarda : SILENCE
Gallery reacts to Bernarda with a small wince.
Watch Christina for cue to begin singing at Mm 13


Mm 13 - 16 Gallery remains standing, facing inward. Sisters and Servant take their places in the Gallery.
Mm 17 - 19 On your entry : Right shoulder shrug, as if someone has pushed you back. Fast start, slow return to neutral. The movement lasts over the three bars.
Mm 20 - 24 Turn head to look downstage on your entry, looking over your shoulder. Hold this position for the length of saying “Kyrie” two times, then slowly return your head to neutral position (facing centre)
Mm 25 - 26 Bring hands to front, hold in front with right hand over left.
Mm 27 (S2 pickup) - 28 Sit down when you start to sing. Feet flat on the floor.
Mm 29 - 30 Turn and talk to your neighbours. Groups of two in the front row. Back row sopranos two groups of three. Back row altos group of 2, group of 3 (Sara, Talisa, Jordyn), group of 2
Mm 31 - 33 “Can you believe how hot it is?”
Mm 34 - 35 “I CAN’T TAKE HOW HOT IT IS!” so incensed about the heat!
Mm 36 - 37 On your entry, turn your head quickly to the left, as if spreading gossip. Come back to centre on beat 2 of Mm 37
Mm 39 (Sop 2 pickup) - 40 On your entry, cross right leg over left leg. Faces are neutral (“I was not just spreading gossip…”) Hands neutral by sides.
Mm 43 - 45 On your entry, bring hands to cross on knees, right hand on top (Smugness)
Mm 46 - 49 On your entry, uncross legs
Mm 50 - 53 Same right shoulder shrug as Mm 17-19
Mm 53 - 57 Same as Mm 20 - 24  -  Look over shoulder to gaze downstage, hold for two Kyries  then return to centre (except Altos who come back to centre on the downbeat of 55)
Mm 58 - 59 Turn head to the right then left, on the half note, two times to each side.
Mm 60 - Heads back to centre on the downbeat
Mm 60 - 62 Right hand begins to writhe and creep upward, starting at the shoulder.
Mm 63 - 64 Left hand pulls right hand into your lap

No pause between the end of Kyrie and the sound of Bernarda’s stick on the floor.


Act 1 Scene 2
All of the lines will be delivered from a seated position, be in character as you respond to Bernarda’s lines. Heads go down on your first line into praying position.


O Frondens Virga
Pitch will be given by Bernarda. Stand on Christina’s cue.
Mm 1 - Sopranos look straight ahead (i.e. on the angle that you are standing in the Gallery) and sing; Altos’ heads are down
Mm 5 - Altos bring heads up on your entry and look straight ahead.
Mm 16-17 On your entry, look up slightly toward the balcony
Mm 23 - Bring gaze back to neutral
After the cutoff, heads go back down
