Notes from Jan 21st Rehearsal

Womanly Song of God
This is to be memorized for next week (Jan 28)

The word “Don” is always pronounced to rhyme with “loan”. Close immediately to the ‘n’.

Alto 2s, be careful not to speed up on page 2. Work with a metronome on the speed of the 16th notes

All Altos, don’t be rushed by the Sop 2s at the bottom of page 5

All parts - rehearse measures 37 - 58 with a recording in order to hear how all the rhythms fit together.

Pages 9 - 11 pay attention to the text to make it come to life (go to the “n” sound early in words like “dancing” and “sun”) Please do no accent the second syllable of “atoms”.

Rise Up
Starts in a 4-part split (Sop 1 on the top line, Sop 2 on the second line, Alto 1 & 2 on the bottom line)

3-part split begins at measure 25 - Sop1 & Sop 2 on the top line, Altos on the bottom line. When the Alto line splits, please split into Alto A and B (in a 3-part split)

Measure 81 (second ending at the bottom of page 10) to the end is a 4-part split.

Prep for Jan 21 Rehearsal

I want to start off by saying thank you to each of you for your enthusiasm and hard work these first couple of weeks. We're making excellent progress on some difficult music and the kind of commitment you've already shown is exactly what is needed to ensure that we have a really outstanding show in April.

HOMEWORK
As I said on Sunday, my strong suggestion is that you memorize the first half of Womanly Song of God this week so you don't have 24 pages of music to memorize next week. It's a long song with a lot of sections so it is absolutely not a song you can memorize in one or two practice sessions. A bit of time each day is the best strategy.

Second, I'd like you to work through your score of Kuka Nukkuu Tuutussasi with this pronunciation guide and make notes so that we don't need to do a word by word session at our next rehearsal. I will certainly help you refine things (like the nuances of vowel shapes, etc) but please have the basics learned so we can sing the whole piece with text right from the start next Sunday. (Morgan and Camilla, I will email you the PDF of the score so you can work on it this week too.)

REHEARSAL PLAN

Prep for Jan 14 Rehearsal

What an AWESOME start to our work on RISE we had on Sunday! Thank you everyone for your positive energy, your great sight singing, and your warm welcome to all of our new singers. :)

HOMEWORK FOR THIS WEEK
It's all about Womanly Song of God:
  • Be an "expert" up to p. 11, m. 95 ("silver"). You don't need to have it memorized (yet!) but you need to be able to sing it confidently, without any errors, and without relying on others. I will only spend about 10 minutes giving this a couple of runs through so you can't rely on our rehearsal time to learn it in any way.
  • Be solid on your part from p. 11, m. 96 up to p. 17, m. 167. This means that you can sing it along with the recording successfully but there might be a few trouble spots.
  • Learn and practice your clapping patterns (don't worry about the singing yet) from m. 237-end.
    • ft = foot stomp; th = thigh slap; cl = clap
    • Tip: Use this online metronome for a 5/8 beat (you can add the 5th beat and click on beats 1 and 4 to get the right accents) and practice with it. I'd set the speed at 144 to start and work up to 200.
    • Soprano 1s, please note that even though there is nothing notated for you, you are supposed to clap the rhythm of the Alto 1 part from m. 263-end.
    • Soprano 2s - warning - your part is the most challenging! Practice lots!

MEMORIZATION SCHEDULE
Please have a look at the memorization schedule and take note that the two longest, hardest pieces are set to be memorized first. This is purposeful. We've learned over the years that the long, difficult ones take a while to really settle in so if we put a big push on them to start, they will feel really settled (and not so long or difficult) by show time. If we wait to memorize them until the end, they tend to still feel shaky by show time. Also, for students, your workload outside of Xara tends to be lighter earlier in the term so it's better timing for these demanding ones. :)

FEES
Fees are due on January 28th. If you need to prorate your fee over a couple of months, please contact Jessica Mailhiot (manager@xara.ca) to make these arrangements. :)

NEW SINGERS & YOUTH MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
We'll be welcoming (or welcoming back!) several new singers this term. I'm excited to see our Xara group dynamic develop and deepen over the term and to extend the XaraLove to all those who are new. In addition to these new/returning folks, we will be welcoming several singers as part of our Youth Mentoring Program. These young singers are in high school and have outstanding choral experience. They will have separate sessions just for them some weeks but we will fully integrate them into the ensemble this term. If you are an experienced member of Xara, please extend extra warmth and support to them!

RISE Intro!

Hello all!

I know it's just about time to check out of the world and go into holiday mode, but I wanted to get some info in your hands about the amazing show we are about to get started on in the new year.

SUMMARY/ETHOS OF THE SHOW:
RISE explores what it means to be a woman searching for agency and fighting for change while trying to honour her elders and her past. Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble will be joined by Xara alumnae, several young singers from our Chrysalis Youth Mentorship program, and guest artists Rebecca Thomas, El Jones, and Michelle Raine. Each section of the show will be collaboratively developed with the featured artist and will include a re-imagined Greek myth, slam poetry, and vulnerable monologue.

The three pieces with guest artists will be developed in January - each artist is writing a piece (2-4 mins in length) and a piece of choral theatre of approx 10 mins will be developed in conjunction with their performance pieces. Because these pieces are still in development, the Xara-only portion of the show will be rehearsed exclusively through January and early February and will be at performance-ready by the beginning of March. This section of the show will be about 25 minutes long.

The starting point for our Xara-only piece was the Greek myth of Pyrrha. Pyrrha was the only woman saved from a flood that Zeus sent to destroy humanity’s wickedness. When she and her husband were faced with repopulating the earth, they consulted an oracle that told them to “throw the bones of your mother behind you." This piece will focus on the relationship between generations who struggle to understand when to cast the work and perspectives of their foremothers aside, when to build on them, and when to rest in them. It offers a meditation on the impact of Third Wave Feminism in the relationships between women of different generations. The flood/storm functions as a metaphor for a life experience that throws women deep into contending with misogyny. The “bones” represent the teaching of our “foremothers” in the feminist movement.

Here's a youtube playlist of the music!

And if you want to download mp3s to help you practice, you can find them here:

And if you're not sure about Third Wave Feminism (or other aspects of Feminism), here's a great little article that is really helpful!

You could also have a look at our website (www.xara.ca) for the "public" info about the show. :)

DATES:
First rehearsal: Jan 7 (2:00-5:30)
Show Week rehearsals:
  - Apr 25, 6-10 PM
  - Apr 26, 6-10 PM
  - Apr 27, 6-10 PM
Shows: Apr 28 at 3PM and 8 PM

Rehearsals are every Sunday (mostly 1:15-5:30) except February 19 evening instead of Feb 18 (due to the long weekend) and Apr 2 evening instead of Apr 1 (due to Easter weekend).

A blog post will go up every week on Tuesdays to help you prepare and rehearse!

A NOTE ABOUT GETTING BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS:
I want to end this post by saying that you were all troupers for a really weird term this fall. Obviously we did lots of great things but it was really strange not having a show to get ready for and no major goals. It will be important to note that once we get started in January you are going to need to reserve regular times to practice between rehearsals in a way that you probably didn't during the fall. Starting the third week of January, a new piece of music will need to be memorized every week (starting with Womanly Song of God!). Prepping a show is really exciting and there's an awesome sense of momentum but it's also more intense that what we had on our plates last this fall.

For now, have an amazing holiday!!! I can't WAIT to get started on RISE with you ... it's going to be such a rewarding show for us!!!
